On February 21, 1872 (Meiji 5), Japan’s first Japanese language daily newspaper is published under the name Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun (東京日日新聞).
In 1875 (Meiji 8), the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun began delivery of its papers, the world’s first newspaper delivery service. Although the company merged with Osaka Mainichi Shimbun (大阪毎日新聞) in 1911 (Meiji 44), it continued to print its paper independently until 1943 (Showa 18).
The Mainichi Shimbun still exists and calls itself Japan’s oldest newspaper.
