Meiji 1900s Other
Yellow Peril-The First Awakening: a cartoon ca 1904-05 by satirical illustrator T. Bianco commenting on the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). The image warns of what was seen as the dangers of the Yellow Peril. On the left is Emperor Meiji of Japan pointing a gun at Tsar Nicholas II of Russia who has awaken to the danger. Other Western leaders are sleeping, unaware of the menace that’s encroaching upon them.

When Japan managed to bring Christian Russia to its knees, it caused much fear among European powers that they would be outnumbered by the masses of Asia.

Lithograph with hand coloring, ink on card stock.
