Osaka Meiji 1890s Georges Bigot
A police officer guards prisoners, wearing sugegasa (sedge-woven hats) and waraji (straw sandals), who are returning to prison after a day’s work. Published in the British weekly illustrated newspaper The Graphic on April 15, 1893 (Meiji 26).
