Studio Meiji 1890s Kazumasa Ogawa
The beautiful geisha Tamae (玉江) from Tokyo’s Nihonbashi geisha district is standing in a doorway holding an uchiwa fan. To celebrate the opening of Asakusa’s Ryounkaku (凌雲閣), the tallest building in Tokyo, an exhibition of 100 portraits of Tokyo’s geisha was held in July of 1891 (Meiji 24). Visitors voted for their most favorite geisha. This is now considered to be Japan’s very first beauty contest.
