Yokohama Meiji 1890s Unknown
Motomachi Hyakudan (One hundred steps) in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. The shinto shrine on top of the hill is Sengen-jinja. At the time that this photo was taken, the city’s population exceeded 70,000. About 4,000 foreigners lived in the city, more than half of them Chinese. Many Japanese business owners catered to this large foreign population, hence the many English signs.
