Dozens of young women in uniform work at switchboards at a telephone switching center of Fukui Yubinkyoku (Post Office). Fukui Yubinkyoku was established on April 8, 1872 (Meiji 5). Japan imported its first telephone in 1877 (Meiji 10). Female telephone operators were called Hello Girls (ハローガール).
