Studio Showa 1920s Unknown
A postcard celebrating German physician Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (1796–1866). Von Siebold taught Western medicine in Japan, and upon his return to Europe became a well-known Japan expert consulted by people like American Naval Commodore Matthew C. Perry, who would later force Japan to open its borders. The card also carries the names of Japan experts Carl Peter Thunberg (1743–1828), a Swedish naturalist, and Engelbert Kaempfer (1651–1716), a German naturalist and physician.
