Tokyo Showa 1920s Unknown
Shinbashi Bridge as seen from Ginza, Tokyo. The building with the tower is the celebrated Teikoku Hakuhinkan Kankoba (current Hakuhinkan), established in October 1899 (Meiji 32). The building featured a large variety of shops and was similar to our modern shopping center. It is generally considered to be the origin of the Japanese department store. The large orange building in the back is Shinbashi Station. Interestingly, most of the signs visible on this image advertise beer.
