Two men in the foreground are packing rice in straw bags, while the man on the left is taking records. A soroban (Japanese abacus) lies on the table next to him. In the back a boy is filling a still open bag with rice. A masu (枡) wooden measuring box lies on the ground. Masu existed in many sizes from 0.9 to 18 liters.
