Headquarters of the Red Cross Society of Japan in Tokyo.

The organization was founded by Count Tsunetami Sano on May 1, 1877 (Meiji 10) and became extremely popular due to involvement of the imperial family. US Army observer Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee, (1864-1940) observed the Japanese Red Cross Society in action during the Russo-Japanese War and called it the “finest organization of its kind in the world.”
