101001-0001 - Matsue Post Office

PURCHASE A LICENSE

Shimane Meiji 1880s Unknown
A very rare image of the Matsue Post Office (松江郵便局) in Shirakata Honmachi (白潟本町) in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture. The photographer stood close to the current location of the Stick Building (スティックビル) and pointed his camera towards the Ohashi Bridge (大橋).

The Matsue Post Office was opened on the North side of Matsue Ohashi on July 1, 1872 (Meiji 5), one year after post offices were opened in Tokyo and Osaka.

It was moved to Shirakata Honmachi on October 10, 1883 (Meiji 16). That building is shown on this photograph. This was replaced by a stone building in September 1891 (Meiji 24), which effectively dates this photograph to between 1883 and 1891.
