Studio Meiji 1900s Unknown
A woman wearing the uniform of a Red Cross nurse. Red Cross nurses were a symbol of modernity during the 1900s. During the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905) they were also an expression of Japan’s internationally lauded commitment to humanitarian ideals. Although modern and new, the photographic postcards actually perpetuated the old tradition of Bijinga (美人画). These pictures of beautiful women were an established genre of ukiyoe woodblock prints.
