Tokutaro Sakai (1869-1959), ca. 1904 (Meiji 37). Sakai, a graduate of Harvard, made Baron Kentaro Kaneko aware of US President Theodore Roosevelt’s offer to mediate peace negotiations during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). Sakai later founded a Christian hostel at the Imperial University of Tokyo, and in 1912 (Meiji 45) became Director of the Press Division of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Photo by J.E.
