120409-0026 - Kiba Lumberyard

Tokyo Taisho 1910s Unknown
A man pushes his log raft along lumber dealers (貯木場) in Kiba (木場) in what is currently Koto-ku (江東区), Tokyo. Kiba was born as a lumberyard during the Edo Period (1603-1868). Located near the mouth of the Sumida River on Edo Bay, it was a perfect location for storing and distributing wood. The area remained a lumberyard until 1969 (Showa 44), when it was moved to Shin-Kiba (新木場). The old Kiba was turned into a park.
