70219-0006 - Nakanoshima

Osaka Meiji 1900s Unknown
A small boat steams on the Tosaborigawa River towards Naniwabashi Bridge and Nakanoshima in Osaka. The building with the smokestack is the Osaka Hotel. The building on the far left is the Osaka Library. The Osaka Central Public Hall, built in 1911, is not visible. As the library was built in 1904, this photo must therefore have been shot between 1904 and 1911. Within a few years this view changed dramatically. In 1915, a new Naniwabashi was opened, located slightly east of the original bridge, while Nakanoshima was extended. The Osaka Hotel was Osaka’s premier Western hotel. It opened in 1881 (Meiji 14) as the Jiyutei Hotel. In 1895 (Meiji 28) it was renamed the Osaka Hotel. It boasted electric light, steam heating as well as English speaking personnel.
