70221-0007 - Motomachi

Yokohama Meiji 1900s Unknown
Lots of flags at Motomachi in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. Around 1890, the city’s population already exceeded 70,000. About 4,000 foreigners lived in the city, more than half of them Chinese. Many Japanese business owners catered to this large foreign population, hence the many English signs. On the left is the famous Kamigataya (上方屋) postcard shop.
