70222-0023 - Oura River

Nagasaki Meiji 1900s Unknown
Danpeibune barges, used for transporting coal, on the Oura River in Nagasaki. In the early 1860s, the mud flats that used to be at the mouth of this river were filled in to create Nagasaki’s foreign settlement. Businesses and hotels were built along the waterfront (later called the Bund) and on the banks of the river. The hillsides were turned into residential areas.
