Tokyo Meiji 1870s Matsuchi Nakajima
An extremely rare image of the old Azumabashi Bridge on the Sumidagawa River in Tokyo. A fisherman watches his net in the foreground, two boats are moored on the river bank. A new Azumabashi was completed in June 1876, while Matsuchi Nakajima (中島待乳) established his first photo gallery at Asakusa Azumabashi ( 浅草吾妻橋 ) in 1874, effectively dating this image to between these two dates. It is believed to be one of Nakajima’s earliest commercial photographs.

(Many thanks to Thomas Keener for the information about Matsuchi Nakajima.)
