Nagasaki Meiji 1900s Unknown

Hotel du Japan (also known as The Japan Hotel) in Nagasaki’s foreign settlement in Oura, in between the English and American consulates. It was the city’s first hotel managed by Japanese.

Located at No.25 Oura, the Japan Hotel was founded by Shintaro Shimizu (清水新太郎) in 1899 (Meiji 32). It was one of the most popular Western-style hotels in Nagasaki until it was destroyed by fire in December 1937 (Showa 12). Besides offering lodging, it also offered catering services. It provided for example the meals of The Christian Endeavor Home for Seamen in Nagasaki.

It was not the first hotel at this location. Other hotels that were located at Oura No. 25 were The Commercial House (1861), The Royal Hotel (1866), The Eureka Hotel (1872), and The Central Hotel (1888).
