Inside Meiji 1900s Teijiro Takagi
Japanese Marriage: The bride and groom seal the marriage with sake during an arranged marriage (omiai). This image comes from “The Ceremonies of a Japanese Marriage,” published in 1905 (Meiji 38) by Kobe based photographer Teijiro Takagi.

Original text: “The actual ceremony between the parties is not so ceremonial as may be supposed and consists simply in drinking ‘Sake’ (three times three) nine times alternately by the bride and bridegroom before the match-maker and his wife.”
