Studio Showa 1930s Unknown
Formal portrait of Fleet Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy, Heihachiro Togo (東郷平八郎, 1848-1934). Poster published by Osaka Mainichi Shimbun on Aug 5, 1934 (Showa 9), a few months after the admiral’s death on May 30.

Togo is one of Japan’s greatest naval heroes, coined the ‘Nelson of the East’ by Western journalists. He was instrumental in destroying the Russian Baltic Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima in 1905 during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905).
