New Year celebrations during Meiji Period (1868-1912). Published in the British weekly illustrated newspaper The Graphic on January 4, 1890 (Meiji 23).
Original text: "A visitor presenting his host with a New year's present ( a box of eggs); Making the rice cake; Bringing home the toys, The 'Hatsouni' procession with the emblem of prosperity parading the principal streets of the town; People in the streets wishing each other a 'Hapy New year'; Men of war's men landing at Tokio to take part in the New Year's festivities."
