120419-0026 - Japanese Lighthouses

Engravings of new lighthouses in Japan published in The Illustrated London News on October 12, 1872 (Meiji 5). In 1868 (Meiji 1), the Japanese government hired Scottish engineer Richard Henry Brunton (リチャード・ヘンリー・ブラントン, 1841-1901) to build lighthouses. He built 26 of them and trained the lighthouse keepers. In Japan he is known as the “Father of Japanese lighthouses.”

The lighthouses in this engraving are: Satamisaki (佐多岬灯台) in Kagoshima, Shionomizaki (潮岬灯台) in Wakayama, Mikomotoshima (神子元島灯台) and Irozaki (石廊埼灯台) in Shizuoka, and Tempozan (天保山灯台, also Tenpozan) in Osaka.
