Nagasaki Meiji 1870s Other

Cargo vessels at Nagasaki.

Published in the Illustrated London News on December 15, 1877 (Meiji 10).

Original text: “Nagasaki. From the picture by Colonel Walter Fane, in the possession of Lord Northbrook.”

Thomas George Baring, 1st Earl of Northbrook, (1826–1904), was a British politician and statesman. While he was Viceroy of India (1872–1876) he encouraged the practice of art among officers of the army and navy. This work was produced by Walter Fane (1828–1885), who would later become a general in the British Army. Fane raised a troop of irregular cavalry which became Fane’s Horse.
