Ukiyoe woodblock print of the Tsukiji Hotel in the foreign settlement of Tsukiji in Tokyo. The is the 22nd print in the series Thirty-six Views of Tokyo (東京三十六景) by Ikkei Shosai (昇斎一景), published in May 1871 (Meiji 4). The Tsukiji Hotel was built in a Western-inspired style and opened in 1868 (Meiji 1). It was destroyed by fire in 1872 (Meiji 5). The hotel is often cited as being Japan’s first Western-style hotel. From 1868 (Meiji 1) through 1899 (Meiji 32), Tsukiji Tepposhu (築地鉄砲洲) was a foreign settlement where foreigners enjoyed extraterritorial rights. |
