Tokyo Bakumatsu 1850s Utagawa Hiroshige

A crowded shopping street at Nihonbashi in Edo (current Tokyo), 1858 (Ansei 5). The shop on the immediate right is Shirokiya, which later grew into a huge department store chain.

This woodblock print is image 44 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a series created by ukiyoe artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858).

It is one of 30 summer scenes in the series.
