Tokyo Bakumatsu 1850s Utagawa Hiroshige

The Oumayagashi ferry on the Sumidagawa River, in Edo (current Tokyo), 1856 (Ansei 3).

In the front is a Yakatabune (屋形船), a roofed boat used as pleasure boat. The silhouette of a geisha entertaining customers is visible on the boat’s bamboo screen.

This woodblock print is image 61 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a series created by ukiyoe artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858).

It is one of 30 summer scenes in the series.
