Tokyo Bakumatsu 1850s Utagawa Hiroshige

A ferryman working his scull on the ferry crossing the Tamagawa River at Haneda in Edo (current Tokyo), 1858 (Ansei 5). In the back, Haneda Benten Shrine and Edo Bay can be seen.

This area is now occupied by Haneda Airport.

This woodblock print is image 72 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a series created by ukiyoe artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858).

It is one of 30 summer scenes in the series.
