An eagle flies over the snow covered marshes of Jumantsubo, also known as Susaki (洲崎), in Edo (current Tokyo), 1857 (Ansei 4). In the back, Mount Tsukuba can be seen.

The marshland here was reclaimed during the Genroku Period (1688-1704). In 1888 (Meiji 21), the brothels from Nezu were relocated here and the place eventually became known as Susaki Paradise (洲崎パラダイス). Until the enactment of the Anti-Prostitution Act in 1958 (Showa 33), it was one of Tokyo’s best known red light districts.

This woodblock print is image 107 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a series created by ukiyoe artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858).

It is one of 20 winter scenes in the series.
