Tokyo Bakumatsu 1850s Utagawa Hiroshige

A snow covered vendor passes by two restaurants in Edo (current Tokyo), 1858 (Ansei 5).

The restaurant on the left advertises yamakujira (mountain whale), a euphemism influenced by buddhism for fare like bear, deer, monkey, badger, otter, fox, wolf, and weasel.

This woodblock print is image 114 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a series created by ukiyoe artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858).

It is one of 20 winter scenes in the series.
