PURCHASE A LICENSE

Tokyo Bakumatsu 1850s Utagawa Hiroshige

Foxes gather at a tree near Oji Inari Shrine in Edo (current Tokyo) during New Year’s Eve, 1857 (Ansei 4). It was believed that foxes from nearby areas gathered here on New Year’s Eve, put on clothes, and visited the nearby shrine.

This woodblock print is image 118 in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (名所江戸百景, Meisho Edo Hyakkei), a series created by ukiyoe artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川広重, 1797–1858).

It is one of 20 winter scenes in the series.
