Outside Meiji 1890s Unknown

Hikifuda (引札), a print used as an advertising flyer by local shops. They were popular from the 1800s through the 1920s.

This print shows the modern technology and industry that was spreading in Meiji era Japan: a steam locomotive representing railways, factories, Western-style sailing vessels, European architecture, a rickshaw, a horse-drawn carriage and a lighthouse.

In the back the rising sun can be seen, a reference to the Japanese navy flag.

It was printed on August 10, 1892 (Meiji 25).
