160904-0039 - Woman at Shinto Shrine

Outside Taisho 1910s Unknown

A Japanese woman is pulling out a numbered stick from a wooden box for fortune telling at a Shinto shrine.

The number on the stick references a numbered piece of paper, called an o-mikuji, with descriptions of one’s fortune, health, romantic relationships and other aspects of daily life.

On the miniature sacred torii gates the year Taisho 5 (1916) is written and January 1st. So this woman is visiting the shrine during hatsumode (初詣), the first Shinto shrine visit of the Japanese New Year.
