Color lithograph of a Japanese woman in kimono standing in front of a plum blossom tree. She is holding a tanzaku (短冊), a narrow strip of paper on which Japanese poems are written. By Japanese artist Shimasuke Hidaka (日高嶋助), 1907 (Meiji 40). From the magazine Jogaku Sekai (女学世界) published by major publishing house Hakubunkan (博文館新社) from January 1901 (Meiji 34) through June 1925 (Taisho 14). The magazine had an appendix of postcards by renowned painters for 5 years, from Vol. 5, No. 1 issued in Jan 1905 (Meiji 38) to Vol. 9, No. 16 in Dec 1909 (Meiji 42). This card was published in Vol. 7, Issue 3 in February 1907 (Meiji 40). |
