The music is a song for Yamagata Normal School (山形師範学校, Yamagata Shihan Gakko), a public teacher-training institution in Yamagata City, founded in 1878 (Meiji 11).

It is the forerunner of Yamagata University (YU) (山形大学, Yamagata daigaku).

Published in May 1919 (Taisho 8) to commemorate the school’s athletic meet (運動会) and designed by a student named Sakae Goto (後藤栄).
