161215-0011 - Playing Karuta

Inside Meiji 1900s Yamada Shashinkan Studio

Illustration of people furiously playing Karuta.

In the clouds over the heads of the players, the shadows of a dragon can be seen.

In the game, one person reads part of a poem on a yomifuda (reading) card, while others try to be the first to get the corresponding torifuda (grabbing) cards with the rest of the poem.

“January” from a rare postcard series titled “Twelve Months of Tokyo Customs”: 東京風俗十二ケ月(一月).

Published by Yamada Shashinkan in Azabu, Tokyo (東京麻布・山田写真館).
