On February 24, 1873 (Meiji 6), the Meiji government removes the anti-Christian edicts which had been in force in one form or another since the late 16th century.
Christian communities could now openly profess their faith and missionaries were able to start preaching and evangelizing to Japanese.
Although the anti-Christian edicts had been removed, It was only when the Meiji Constitution was promulgated in 1889 (Meiji 22) that Christianity was officially allowed.
