Yukichi Fukuzawa (福澤諭吉, 1835–1901) is born at what is now Hotarumachi, Fukushimaku in Osaka City. His father was a treasury officer representing for the domain of Nakatsu (in northern Kyushu).
As an author, writer, teacher, translator, political theorist, and founder of Keio University, he made an important contribution to the quickly changing ideas of politics and civil society during the Meiji Period (1868-1912).
Fukuzawa is generally regarded as one of the founders of modern Japan; his portrait is printed on the 10,000 yen bill.
