The New York Times calls Duke University Press a research university on a par with the country’s most elite institutions. Duke’s eminent academic reputation is a direct result of the high standards it sets for all its endeavors.
So it’s no surprise that when scholars of history, women’s studies, literature, and cultural studies followed the Modern Girl around the world, analyzing her manifestations in Germany, Australia, China, Japan, France, India, the United States, Russia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, they turned to Duke University Press.
In its turn, Duke University Press turned to meijishowa for an arresting, yet representative and scholarly cover image. The publisher found it in this 1933 promotional poster for The Asahi Weekly.
We think the result speaks for itself.

True to its name, KK Bestellers has given birth to a large number of bestsellers in Japan. The publisher’s books are such a part of many people’s daily life, and the company’s alligator logo so well-known, that its publications are popularly known as Alligator Books (ワニの本, Wani no Hon).
When the publisher needed vintage photos of Tokyo’s famed Yoshiwara red light district for a book about this area, it turned to MeijiShowa. It ended up using six images, three of which were put on the cover.
