Kobe Meiji 1890s Unknown

Kaigandori (Bund) in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture as seen from the Meriken Hatoba pier. Fishermen are working in their boats.

The big building in the middle, located at No. 2, initially was the office of Walsh Hall & Co, before becoming the Kobe Branch of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank during the 1880s.

The partially obscured building on the left, at No. 1, housed the offices of trading company and tea exporter Mourilyan, Heimann & Co. During the 1880s, it became the office of W. M. Strachan & Co., Limited, an insurance agency.

On the far right are the offices of tea exporter Smith, Baker & Co., located at No. 3. See blog entry.
