Tennoji Park in Osaka, opened in 1909 (Meiji 42). Until the Meiji Period (1868 -1912), this area consisted of forests, rice fields and wild nature. In 1903, the 5th Domestic Industrial Exhibition (第五回内国 勧業博覧会) was held here. It was a huge exhibition covering some 320,000 square meters and, in spite of its name, featured exhibitions from 18 foreign countries. During the five months of the exposition, more than 5,300,000 people visited; almost 12% of the Japanese population. Tennoji Park was set up on a 270,000 square meter section of the exhibition grounds. |
