70710-0018 - Playing Karuta

Inside Showa 1920s Unknown

Four young Japanese women in kimono and traditional hairdo are playing Karuta.

The woman on the left is reading part of a poem on a yomifuda (reading) card, while others try to be the first to get the corresponding torifuda (grabbing) cards with the rest of the poem.

This card is from a series called “Nihon Fuuzoku” (Japanese Customs). The printing quality is not so good, but the series gives a great view on daily life in Japan during the early Showa Period (1925-1989).
