Sterilization and operating rooms at the Ogata Hospital for women in Osaka. The hospital descended from the clinic and school started by Ogata Koan (1810-1863), who played a major role in dispersing Western medical knowledge (Rangaku) in Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1868). His school the Tekijuku eventually became Osaka University in 1938 (Showa 13). Famous alumni include political theorist Yukichi Fukuzawa (1835-1901), military leader Masujiro Omura (1824-1869), military commander Keisuke Otori (1833-1911) , and military architect Ayasaburo Takeda (1827-1880).
