Osaka Showa 1920s Unknown

Takashimaya department store on Sakaisuji in Nagahoribashi, Osaka.

Founded in 1829 in Kyoto by Iida Shinshichi as a retailer of used clothing and cotton cloth, the company opened its 7 story Sakaisuji store in 1922 (Taisho 11).

Sakaisuji housed no less than four major department stores: Mitsukoshi in Kouraibashi, Shirokiya in Bingochou, Takashimaya in Nagahoribashi and Matsuzakaya in Nipponbashi. Hereby, Sakaisuji effectively replaced the centuries old Shinsaibashi as the most important shopping street in Osaka.

In 1932 (Showa 7), Takashimaya moved into the former premises of Matsuya department store in Nipponbashi, where it is still located today.
