Yokohama Meiji 1880s Kimbei Kusakabe

Isezakicho-dori in Yokohama, Kanagawa. People walk under colorful advertising banners. The street was famous for its many theaters and was called Theater Street by the foreign population of Yokohama.

This photograph captures the lively atmosphere in the vicinity of Isami-za in Matsugae-cho (present-day Isezaki-cho 2-chome), taken between 1887 and 1897. See blog entry.
