After Ise Taisha, Atsuta Jingu is Japan’s second-most important shrine. It was originally founded about 1900 years ago to enshrine the sacred sword Kusanagi-no-tsurugi, one of the Imperial symbols.

Most shrine buildings were destroyed during WWII. It was rebuilt after the war and the main buildings were completed in 1955. It is now visited by nine million worshippers and tourists each year.
