Yokohama Meiji 1900s Unknown

Rickshaws, a bicyclist and a horse-drawn carriage pass below flags at Bentendori, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture.

During the Meiji Period (1868-1912), this was Yokohama’s premier shopping street.

In the back, the clock tower of watch and clock merchant Kawakita Naozo Shoten can be seen. It was the street’s most important landmark.

Considering the US flags, this photo was possibly taken during the visit of the Great White Fleet in 1908. Also see 70219-0019.
