Nagasaki Meiji 1880s Unknown

Nagasaki Harbor and the southernmost part of the foreign settlement in Minamiyamate (南山手) at the foot of Mt. Nabekanmuri (鍋冠山麓) and Furuko-machi (古河町) as seen from the west bank, taken between 1882 (Meiji 15) and 1892 (Meiji 25).

Of the three large ships anchored in Nagasaki Harbor, one is being coaled. Because of its strategic location between China and the US, as well as the availability of high quality coal from nearby Takashima Coal Mine (高島炭鉱等), Nagasaki was a very popular coaling port during the Meiji Period.

This image makes a panorama with image #81117-0009 – Nagasaki Harbor.
