Miyagi Taisho 1910s Unknown
Japanese workers flensing a whale (removing the fatty, outer layer of skin) in Rikuzen Ayukawako Port, Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture (宮城県石巻市陸前鮎川港). A postcard of the Toyo Hogei Kaisha (東洋捕鯨会社). The company was the successor of Nagato, Yamaguchi Prefecture based Nihon Enyo Gyogyo. This was Japan’s first successful modern whaling company founded in 1899 (Meiji 32) by Juro Oka (1870-1923), who introduced modern whaling to Japan. Additional text on the card: イワス鯨六十尺引上解剖の&#20
