Yokohama Meiji 1870s Kimbei Kusakabe

Rickshaws in front of the Yokohama German Club on Honcho-dori in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, ca. 1870s. The club was established in 1863 (Bunkyu 3) and moved to this building in 1869 (Meiji 2). Although the principle members were German, non-Germans were welcome as well.

On the right are the gateposts of the Kanagawa Prefectural Office and the U.S. Consulate. In the back, the clock tower of Yokohama Town Hall is visible. Designed by the American architect Richard P. Bridgens (1819-1891), it was completed in 1874 (Meiji 7).

Honcho-dori is also called Honmachi-dori in some sources. Maps of the time, however, use Honcho-dori.
